Radiation modification of gelatin for bio-/medical-devices

Oyama, Tomoko; Oyama, Kotaro*; Ishiwata, Shinichi*; Taguchi, Mitsumasa

no journal, ,

Gelatin, a natural polymer derived from collagen, is used in wide application fields such as food products, pharmacy, and drug delivery systems. However, cytotoxic crosslinkers such as formaldehyde are generally used for these applications because the sol-gel transition of gelatin occurs near the range of body and cell culture temperatures. In this study, we evaluated radiation-modification of gelatin. Gelatin in solid state was decomposed by irradiation. However, in water solution, crosslinking was induced without any toxic crosslinkers. It is considered that the reactive species produced from water react with gelatin chains and induce crosslinking. From the analyses of gel fraction and molecular weight of sol, it was determined that the radiation-crosslinked gelatin hydrogel was stable for 7 days in water at 37$$^{circ}$$C. The obtained hydrogel can be used for cell culture.

Status of international and domestic standardization activity on radiation processing level dose

Kojima, Takuji

no journal, ,

Process controll/quarity assurance based on dosimetric result is performed in radio-sterilirization processing of health-care products and foods. Dosimetry systems used for this purpose should be calibrated against, in other words, be tracable to international or domestic standard. This paper reviews the present status on dose standardization activity is reviewed refering to progress in documented standards.

Construction of database of radiation resistance on polymer materials and equipments

Sugimoto, Masaki; Shimada, Akihiko; Miyashita, Atsumi; Yoshikawa, Masahito

no journal, ,

Various materials and equipment are used under radiation environment in accelerator facility or nuclear power station. For the decommissioning plan of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, those will be used in the severe environment with high dose rate which has not been experienced. In order to use materials and equipment safely in the long term, radiation durability assessment is required. Then we collected that information from academic journals and public reports of JAEA, and built "Database of Radiation Resistance on Polymer Materials and Equipment" (DRRPME). This database contains the information about 423 polymer materials, 223 equipment, 103 oil and paint and 129 composite materials, and those information can be searched according to the name or classification of the materials and equipment, the kind of radiation and the examination environment. In this presentation, we introduce the outline, usage instructions and the procedure for acquisition of the DRRPME, so that this database can be effectively utilized for radiation durability assessment of the materials and equipment.
